1.Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common form of vertigo. It occurs when we make sudden head movements or when we move our heads in a certain position. This type of vertigo is rarely serious and can be easily treated.
2.Vertigo can also be caused due to labyrinthitis, which is an inner ear infection. A person suffering from labyrinthitis can suffer from sudden bout of vertigo which may lead to loss of hearing.
3.Vertigo is one of the symptoms of the Meniere’s disease. People suffering from Meniere’s disease have sudden and severe attacks of vertigo and unpredictable hearing loss.
4.People who have multiple sclerosis usually suffer from vertigo too. The vertigo attacks are sudden.
5.Acoustic neuroma is a tumor of the nerve tissue which causes vertigo. Along with vertigo, the patient also suffers from ringing sounds in one side of his ear and hearing loss.
6.When there is no proper flow of blood to the base of the brain, vertigo can occur. Cerebellar hemorrhage is characterized by vertigo, headaches in the lower back of the skull, double vision, speaking and swallowing difficulties and balance problems while walking.
7.Sometimes, injury to the neck or head trauma may also cause vertigo. This type of vertigo disappears on its own.
8.Migraine may also cause vertigo which is known as migraine associated vertigo (MAV). This type of vertigo may either be a symptom of migraine or as a related neurological disorder.
9.Diabetic complications can also cause vertigo. In fact, studies have shown that three causes of vertigo are related to diabetes.
So how can vertigo be treated and cured? If you suffer from mild vertigo, then there are some home-made remedies you can prepare to prevent and cure the vertigo attacks. Ginger and Ginkgo biloba are very effective in reducing the effects of vertigo.
If, however, the vertigo attacks are continuous and persistent, you should immediately seek medical attention. The vertigo may be a symptom to a more serious disease which should be treated. There is no scientifically proven treatment for vertigo but by taking medications targeted to cure whatever disease you may be suffering from, your vertigo attacks can also be cured.

Causes of Vertigo and its cure

Vertigo is a type of dizziness where you feel like your whole surrounding is spinning when in actual, it is stationary. The main symptoms of vertigo are nausea, disorientation, blurry vision and weakness. Vertigo can be classified into two types-

Peripheral- Vertigo caused by problems with the inner ear or vestibular system is called peripheral vertigo. The most common reason is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Other causes include Meniere’s disease, labyrinthitis, superior canal dehiscence syndrome and visual vertigo.
Central- Vertigo caused by problems arising from the Central Nervous system (CNS) is known as central vertigo.

Some of the causes of vertigo are as follows:

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most general form of vertigo and is distinguished by the feeling of motion caused by sudden jerking head movements. This type of vertigo is hardly ever serious and can be easily treated.
Vertigo may also be due to swelling within the inner ear (labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis). The most common cause of labrynthitis is a viral or bacterial inner ear infection.
Meniere’s disease is characterized by episodes of vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss. People with this condition have sudden bouts of severe vertigo, irregular hearing loss, as well as periods when they are symptom-free.
Acoustic neuroma is a benign primary intracranial tumor of the nerve tissue that can cause vertigo. The symptoms of acoustic neuroma are vertigo with ringing in one ear and hearing loss.
One of the usual symptoms of multiple sclerosis is Vertigo. The vertigo attack starts suddenly. Examination of the patient’s eyes may reveal his inability to see past the midline.
Vertigo may also be caused by Head trauma and neck injury. Such vertigo usually goes away by itself.
Migraine may also cause vertigo.
Diabetes can cause arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) which in turn leads to decreased flow of blood to the brain, causing vertigo symptoms.

As you can see, Vertigo is not a disease but a symptom resulting from other diseases. There is no scientifically proven cure for vertigo. If you suffer from severe attacks of vertigo, you should consult a doctor. Based on the disease you are suffering from, the doctor may prescribe medicines.
There are some home-made remedies that can help cure vertigo. Ginger and Ginkgo biloba (a Chinese herb) are known for their quick and effective action against vertigo. Another natural remedy for curing vertigo is to soak a mixture of almonds, pumpkin seeds, 3 tablespoons of wheat and 1 tablespoon of poppy seed and leaving them overnight. Grind the mixture the next morning and drink it with a glass of warm milk or water. Drinking this mixture once a day for a week will help reduce the symptoms of vertigo.
